La Lune won 1st place in short film catagory!!!!

La Lune won another award in the category of Independent Short, Ages 12- 18.

The Celamony was held in a beautiful city Santa Fe, New Mexico. Ranny Levy (the president of Kids First), Ann Church (Senior VP marketing) and other staffs organized the celemony put this beautiful and inspiring celamony together. The Award luncheon was provided by Santa Fe School of Cooking where film makers had amazing traditional dish that was prepared by experienced chiefs and staffs. I was very impressed with their hospitality and professionalism. It was a good chance to mingle with other filmmaker winners.

Thank you so much to Kids First giving me this encouragment to keep going with what I do.

Roxy's Dream

"Roxy’s Dream" is about my dog. I had adopted Roxy 4 months before I made this film.

She collects my shoes in her bed and chews them all. My precious shoes start running out really quickly. I was frustrated yet I tried to understand why she does what she does.

I came up with this short film by observing her with great love and imagination. She might have a good excuse. Maybe she was just dreaming about chasing birds and it happened to be shoes in real life. Or she was just bored… Oh well…

La Lune won the best Computer Animation Short in student film category at IFFF.
It was such an honor to receive an award at the same day that Mr. Phil Roman received Friz Award. IFFF is one of the best film festivals that well organized and presented.

I MADE IT!!! finished 6 min 53 sec long film called "La Lune" for Cal Arts Open Show 2007 on April 23rd.
It has been tough and challenging...somehow I did. Very proud.

I took 2 months of break travelling, cooking, and hanging out with my friends.
Going to Paris with my husband was the most relaxing and inspiring trip ever!
Learned a lot of art and life...

Here are some screen shots of sc_028 firstpass animation. (I am just happy that I finally finished one firstpass animation.!!!)

After the whole block-out animation, it all came down to 50 scenes. Compared to the original 81 scenes, it got chopped off pretty well. I am working on "FirstPass Animation" until the end of March. Tough schedule? oh yes...I didn't even updated the texture yet!!! (crying inside...)

3D animatic

I am currently working on an animatic using 3d movie files replacing all the drawings in 2D animatic. Lighting, shading and rendering will be a quite challeng in this project. Everything is a learning process. I am not trying to make it perfect at this point. I will try to finish this by April 23rd. (That's a CalArts deadline)

The nature of "student life" makes me having unhealthy diet and an irregular schedule on sleeping time. I am too old to keep up with all this, but I am trying.

I think I could finish the 3d animatic by this weekend. Now it's all about animation. I might start putting up the screen shots as I finish rendering. I just hope that I don't get burn out too fast. I just want to finish my film and move on. After this I will feel good about myself.

Inspiration

Lately, I found myself desperately looking for an inspiration. It is not an inspiration that you could find from some art books or artists. I do not want to settle with nice looking models, animations or textures. Those are all tools to deliver what you have to say. I want to communicate with the world. I want to find a way to tell the world that I have a voice wanting to be heard.

During the time I struggle with a lack of a technical knowledge or even artistic challenges, I still need to focus on the fact that my purpose is to communicating rather than learning the tool. The rest follows when you figure out the big picture. Because the passion leads you to find a way.

I always had a hard time communicating through languages either Korean or English. I guess my linguistic skill is not sophisticated enough yet. So I need to find better way to communicate. I chose the art. If God ever has given me something that I am good at, I believe that it's an art, which I have been hating for it. (Why can't I be a lawyer or doctor?...)

My film became very personal. I decided to make it very personal because for the first time in my life, I want to take a journey to put myself out there and show to the world that there is a voice shouting by a tall, pizza-face Asian girl. Ha ha

Cal Arts 2007 Spring

The school started at Jan. 16th. I was busy preparing classes and adjusting to new teachers and classmates. I am taking the minimum to have more working time of my film.

I think I have a little less than 3 months to finish film. The rigging for characters was not done yet but I think I could handle it with a basic rig. I can alway update the rig and animations as I progress the film. I need to focus on finishing a film not making it perfect. I sometimes get overwhelmed by the amount of work that I have to do. Lighting and shading is a big challenge because I have the least experience with it.

I decided to chop off the least important scenes to reduce the length of the film. I, myself lose interest very fast if the film is too long without having any explosions or shocking sc....haha Since this is a complicated story, I assume that it is going to be hard to make audience to understand instantly what happens in the film. To prevernt this, I made the design of background more simple, interesting during the pre-production.
My goal is to make good animations to deliver the story clearly for next 2 months.

I tend to get too worried and serious when it comes to work. I might start learning to smoke pot or somthing..lol

I spent a whole day to finish the castle tree design.

Each castle section has a little event as the girl make a move to the top. I was trying to take into consideration as I designed it. I hope that I could build a model that delivers this flat style and color.

I changed the material of the glass to have more specular highlight. Compared to the other material, it looks more like glass. I just have to play with the lighting since it seems to have too much highlight.

After render the scene, I realized that I need to expand it to 25 sec. to show how the butterflies transform to fish.

The model is done by Gennady Babichenko, my former co-worker. The model captures the feeling of the drawing very well. The next step is to rig the character and make sure that she can move how I want to.

I am leaving for a week to Hawaii to have a wedding and get together with my family. I can't wait to see my family. I just hope that it wouldn't be so tiring. All preperations and decisions will finally paid off, I hope. I only have a little less than 5 months of time left to finish La Lune. Since I am so not logical, I would say I will die trying or be sad for another 5 years. Everyday has been so challenging in that I had to shift a gear from the design to assignments to CG courses to dealing with all kinds of occassions outside of CalArts (2 bridal showers, 2 weddings, trips to Frezno for thanksgiving, birthdays...). Yet, finally got the song that we want for a bride and groom dance. haha. The creative and technical challenges that I face everyday, I get knocked down or one more step-up. I can't be burned out yet. It is a start.

I gave Moon Su a color study of the hourglass. It is a such a joy to look at it in 3D. He added a transparent look on top of the tree and it gives dreamy look to it.
The design process is the bottle neck right now. I wish I was faster...or stop making excuses and do it!

Girl character turnaround

I finally did girl character turn around. It was harder than I thought. I, myself am modeling based on this and it's very challenging. I currently working on the girl's head and belt design.
I seem to do better with thumb nails than tide-down design. It might be everyone's challenge.

Today, I decided to make a blog to have people see the progress of my short film. The title of the film is as "La Lune" tentatively since the moon is an important part of the film. When I put a bunch of thumb nails from my "storyboard" and made a simple animatic, it turned out to be 8 min. I am trying to find a way to make it shorter, simpler, and more interesting.

My design skill needs to develop and my drawings are rusty. I've come to realize that complicated drawing doesn't mean good rather being confusing. It all goes back to your imagination and drawings. An old man once said...

It is a just start yet hope to flurish...
